In 1997, President Bill Clinton signed the 50 States Commemorative Coin Program Act into law. It was to honor the 50 States that comprise the United States. Since then, it has been the most popular coins for collectors. There are two locations that strike the 50 State Quarters, Philadelpia with P mintmark and Denver with D mintmark, which means there are 100 quarters to have a complete collection. There is also a special type of version for collector that carries mintmark S.

The designs of the state quarters are selected by the state governor and usually the icon people know about that state, for instance, New York state quarters feature the Statue of Liberty and the caption ‘Gateway to Freedom’.
